Weird Windows Stuff

How odd :  You need to click

in order to STOP Windows.

It's not often that stuff happens within the Windows Operating System that benefits the user experience.
Usually weird stuff is an irritant (at best) or a cause of major issues that require a lot of repairs (at worst).
This page documents some of the weird things I have run across using Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium.
Some I understand why they happened - some leave me clueless.

Disc Cleanup vs Cleanup system files

A  Weird  good issue... 30% reduction of Physical Memory usage.

This one has something to do with Java's automatic updater service. I don't know why this 'glitch' started to happen but now every time I boot up, Re-start or log-off/log-in, the Task Manager will build over 15,000 Image Names for javaws.exe and Physical Memory will approach 100%**
Then an Error pop up window or a warning sound will occur...the number of Image Names and amount of Memory used will begin to decline.
When this abnormality completes, the Java Update Available icon will show up in the notification area of the Taskbar. The Task Manager gets back to showing my "normal" number of processes...BUT the total amount of Physical Memory used is 30%  LOWER than it was before AND  the CPU core temperature is LOWER by about 10%  !

The picture below shows what happens - before, during and after

I have run my system this way for weeks now,  with the exact same number of programs, browsers and windows open that I usually had running before this Java thing started happening...I have not noticed ANY problems but have noticed great improvement in over-all responsiveness to user input (go figure)....This is especially noticeable after 3-4 hours of operation.
For the reasons stated above, I'm reluctant to "fix" this issue...nor do I want to accept the Java Update that's available...

** I can prevent this abnormality from happening with no ill effects by:
1) right clicking the jsched.exe in Task Manager's Processes tab [image Name] and selecting End Process
2) using System Configuration [msconfig.exe] (Startup) and unchecking the box for  Java latform SE Auto Updater

- Warning note -
I believe this aberration eventually lead to a total crash of my system, requiring a complete reload of the operating system.
When I reloaded WIN 7 from my 4 year old DVD and used Update to get the drivers etc. I avoided down loading anything Java related.
I have not missed having Oracle's crap for more than 2 years now.

Here's a view of Task Manager's Performance tab while the javaws.exe is cycling.
Results of waiting for the javaws.exe to complete its cycle ...
Opening my normal programs AFTER it cycles             vs.              Opening the programs BEFORE it cycles.

Weird pop up messages - programs stop working correctly
Why do these things happen? There can be untold 'reasons'...You are better off just figuring out how to fix them rather than trying to understand them  because very often the How did that happen and/or the Why did that happen cannot be discovered...

Irritatingly Weird warning or Error pop ups
These are often linked to name-brand downloaded program files. Sometimes the big name manufacturers 'embed' so many
useless programs on your machine when you install their software. They scatter the folders and files everywhere on your drive.
Some of the software cannot be completely Uninstalled or Disabled using Services (Local).
Usually you can stop them from starting by using System Configuration (msconfig.exe)  and unchecking their boxes.
Doing this does not always stop the installed hardware devices from completing the tasks that you bought them to do
(i.e. video cards, Flash drives and printers will still operate).
But their software in files and folders remain, cluttering up your machine's storage devises...parts of them remain
somewhere and everywhere on your machine. Nvidia and Hewlett Packard do this as do many other companies.

I won't spend much time trying to figure out why Windows couldn't find the specified module. Most of the time Windows itself
moved, deleted or renamed it...I just want the pop up to go away ! !

Weird Taskbar issues
The following happened at different times - Sometimes the Desktop menu would show up behind the Taskbar
Sometimes it was invisible for several seconds, just an outline...Then a blank menu and finally the text and shortcut links showed up...
I fixed this one by deleting some of the shortcuts and rebooting...then I created new shortcuts for the same stuff, replacing the ones that were deleted...fixed the problem!

Sometimes it shows very tiny icons and text after downloading/installing Windows Updates...If Windows needs
to be re-started to finish installing the updates and "Restart now" is used instead of Start/Shut Down, **it happens.
This issue went away after a few days - perhaps "fixed" by another Windows Update patch...

4/5/2019 ... It's back ! !

Weird DNS setting over-ride
I used to have CenturyLink DSL internet...At one point I had an issue getting data for my ApexTrader program when using
CenturyLink's default DNS. I was advised to switch to Google's DNS server and that issue went away.
I now have Charter Communication Cable internet. Their default DNS is as shown below... If I change settings to
Google's DNS server address  it won't "stick". After a while it reverts back to the Charter default.
But apparently it's just as good a server as Google's since I notice no problems with the conection...
